Vice President: BET, Youth & Music - Viacom International Media Networks Africa
As the Vice President of VIACOM INTERNATIONAL MEDIA NETWORKS (VIMN) Africa’s BET, Youth & Music portfolio, Monde Twala is responsible for driving the development and growth of powerhouse music, youth and entertainment brands BET, MTV, MTV Base and VH1, across the African continent.
After two decades in the industry, Twala, (40), has developed a diverse understanding of the African broadcast landscape, with expertise that spans multiple content genres including sports, documentary, drama, soaps, news and current affairs, reality, short- and long-form formats.
He has extensive experience in live sports broadcasting, acquisitions, sponsorship and rights management.
Twala recently announced that Johannesburg will paly host to the MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) for the first time. This glitzy award ceremony – which will feature some of the biggest artists from the continent – takes place at the Northgate Ticketpro Dome on October 22.
Since joining Viacom, he has been part of the team that developed African versions of the popular international property Ridiculousness as well as bringing current topics to the forefront by driving conversations with youth such as MTV Base Meets Bill Gates (where a panel of six African entrepreneurs engaged with the billionaire to discuss how to make Africa a better place for the future); and What Women Want (a roundtable featuring leading female personalities discussing issues that women face in today’s society).
Twala also spearheads two news flagship shows across the MTVBASE/BET platforms – NEWSish (which features key influencers addressing current affairs in a light hearted manner) and BET’s new lifestyle & magazine format, A List – a daily news programme presented by Nandi Madida and Ayanda Thabethe.
His extensive production experience stands him in good stead to exploit the opportunities around VIMN /MTV/BET franchises and formats across the continent.
The veteran South African broadcast executive joined the VIMN Africa family in April 2016 after nearly 20 years’ experience in the South African broadcasting and media industry, where he worked for public broadcaster SABC, and South Africa’s largest FTA commercial channel, e.tv.
Natural leadership ability, insight and people-focused are just some of the words used to describe Twala in the industry. His love for sport has also taught him to be a team player. Added to this, his commitment to youth development and mentorship through his monthly knowledge forums, aimed at emerging media professionals and students, are set to position him as one of South Africa’s most influential business leaders.
Twala lives by the old African adage ‘Umuntu nguMuntu ngaBantu’ – ‘It’s the people around us, who make us who we are’ – which continues to guide him in his inclusive leadership approach.
Twala holds a WBS Map Advanced Management Degree from Wits Business School in South Africa and has earned credits in Marketing, Business Management, Consumer & Buyer Behaviour, and Economics.
