The KZN Music Imbizo is slowly making its aims clear – to be the most important music business gathering in the continent. The 2017 event has yet to announce its key speakers but already there is a buzz about some of the side events.
The KZN Music Imbizo 2017 seems to be a very inclusive affair, that will see over 20 countries being represented for three days of networking, information sharing, exhibiting and some serious partying to some talented musicians from all over the continent. The Imbizo will be catering for all types of music industry professionals and the audience (fans) as it looks into the PRESENT FUTURE – THE DIGITAL FUTURE.
In the previous year, the global music industry has been slowly showing signs of growth from a slump of the previous +10 years. The signs are positive. How does this impact on Africa? What is driving the growth? Who benefits? What are the new opportunities? What are the new revenue streams? Mobility in Africa? Technology and/versus the content creators – how friendly are we? Is there enough education around intellectual property rights in the continent? Creative and Cultural Industries Policy? The 2017 panel discussions will look into the details
The exhibition area has been extended to support 50 stands of varying sizes (2m x 2m, 3m X 2m and 3m x 3m). An open invitation to music related businesses (small and big), creative sector organisations and government departments to participate. Previous exhibitors include VIP Booking (Denmark), Durban Film Office, Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA), Department of Arts and Culture (National), Ukhozi FM, KwaZulu-Natal United Music Industry Association (KUMISA), Association of Independent Record Companies (AIRCO) and many others. For more details on the exhibition space and costs, you can visit http://www.kzn-musicimbizo.co.za/exhibitions/ or email Zama – email@example.com.
This year, a special exhibition will be on show to usher in Heritage Month (September is Heritage Month in South Africa). Look out for more details on that.
There are also two interesting additions to the elements that make up the KZN Music Imbizo 2017 – NEW MUSIC SESSION and the MUSIC VIDEO PITCH. The new music session is a radio plugin session, where a number of radio music compilers are invited to listen to new music being criticed by industry experts. They will also be given a chance to give their own opinions on the music. This will also be valuable feedback for the musicians. The music video pitch also takes the same format where music video compilers are invited to view new music videos – there are no critics but the video compilers will give feedback and maybe express interest on music videos that meet their standards. If these two sessions are pulled off well … the results might be game changing.
Live music and touring have always been an important aspect of the music industry. Beyond being a topic on the panel discussions, the KZN Music Imbizo 2017 will go an extra to showcase some live music from musicians from all over the continent and the diaspora. Performances will start as early as Tuesday 29 August till Sunday 03 September – a six day programme of live music across a number of venues all over Durban.
Hiphop and Gqom beat makers can look forward to the battles. Schathamiya will also have a platform to showcase.
It is just over 190 days to the KZN Music Imbizo 2017 and we are expecting more revelations about what to look forward to this year.
